What it takes
Snowshoeing is the simplest way to get into the winter backcountry — if you can walk, you can snowshoe. Modern aluminum-frame snowshoes strap onto any winter boot and let you walk on top of deep snow that would otherwise be impassable. National parks, state forests, and Nordic centers maintain marked snowshoe trails, and guided moonlight snowshoe hikes are a winter highlight at resorts across Colorado, Vermont, and the Pacific Northwest. The workout is substantial: snowshoeing burns 50% more calories than walking at the same pace.
